World's shortest international flight cancelled

An eight-minute hop between two towns in Switzerland and Germany was said to be the world's shortest international flight, according to DW (Deutsche Welle).com. After starting in November, the airline company said there was low demand.

An eight-minute flight between Altenrhein in Switzerland and Friedrichshafen in southern Germany has been cancelled.

The nearly 20 kilometer flight over Lake Constance was said to be the world's shortest regularly scheduled international flight.

Austrian-based airline People's Viennaline launched the twice a week service in November, but said demand was too low to continue. In March, only 2,300 hopped over the lake.

The last flight will take place on April 14.

Environmentalists had criticized the route as an unnecessary source of pollution. Locals also complained about the noise.
