YAP ANNOUNCES ONLINE POLL RESULTS ON ACTIVITY OF OSCE MINSK GROUP
The New Azerbaijan Party has released the results of the online website poll on the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group, which is tasked with mediating a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
Minsk Group’s activity is always in the center of Azerbaijan public’s attention and considered controversial. The Head of State Ilham Aliyev has always expressed discontent over the group’s activity, and urged it to be more constructive and active.
Given the topicality of the issue, YAP website poll asked “How do you assess the activity of the OSCE Minsk Group in settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh?”.
63 percent of respondents are sure that Minsk Group co-chairs do not fully use their potential for solving the conflict. No one denies that since its establishment the OSCE Minsk Group has done important work and took some steps to bring the stances closer. The OSCE, the organization enjoying international prestige, does not show necessary determination to find a solution to the conflict, and this factor deepens the problem and impedes its solution although Minsk Group co-chair countries - USA, Russia, France - have enough prestige in the world and region. These leading nations have strong leverages to influence on the aggressive Armenia. Moreover, co-chair countries as permanent members of the UN Security Council can make Armenia abide by four UN Security Council resolutions demanding withdrawal Armenian troops from the Azerbaijan lands.
However, the fact that their approach to the conflict, making no distinction between aggressive Armenia and occupation-hit Azerbaijan, and in some cases, making statements in favor of the occupant, has had some impact on the public opinion. Sometimes, contradicting statements made by the co-chairs in Yerevan and Baku make some people think that this organization is not serious and effective.
30 percent of respondents are concerned over “slow pace of conflict resolution process”. Only 7 % of respondents are satisfied with the activity of the Minsk Group activity.
Positions of the Azerbaijan government and greater part of the public coincide as to the resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, and this factor strengthens even more the stance of the Azerbaijani side during negotiations.
