9 killed, 16 injured in road accident in central Tanzania

At least nine people, including four students, were killed and 16 others injured on Thursday morning after a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck in central Tanzania's Dodoma region, according to Xinhua.

The accident occurred at around 6:40 a.m. local time (0340 GMT) in the Nyasa Camp area of Chemba district of the region, according to Dodoma Regional Police Commander Galus Hyera.

"Preliminary investigations show the truck driver veered off his lane and crashed head-on into the bus. The damage was severe, with the bus body torn from front to back," Hyera said.

He added that the bus driver died instantly, while the truck driver was injured and admitted to Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital.

Dodoma Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, saying five people died at the scene while four others succumbed to injuries on their way to the hospital.
