Azerbaijan entrusted with co-chairmanship of roundtable within International Migration Review Forum
Baku, May 6, AZERTAC
The second International Migration Review Forum has commenced at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. An Azerbaijani delegation, led by Vusal Huseynov, Chief of the State Migration Service, is participating in the forum. The delegation also includes representatives of the country’s Permanent Mission to the UN, headed by Permanent Representative Tofig Musayev.
The forum is the main global platform on migration, held once every four years, aimed at reviewing the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, assessing achievements and gaps, and defining future priorities for migration governance. It brings together governments, international organizations, civil society, and other stakeholders to discuss inclusive and effective migration management.
As a result of Azerbaijan’s active role in migration governance, the country—serving as Co-Chair of the Champion Countries Initiative for the implementation of the GCM for 2026—will deliver a joint statement on behalf of participating states, along with a national statement.
On the first day of the forum, Azerbaijan was entrusted by the President of the UN General Assembly with the co-chairmanship of one of the four key roundtables. Azerbaijan co-chairs Roundtable 1 together with Sweden.
The roundtable focused on minimizing adverse drivers of migration, expanding regular migration pathways, ensuring fair recruitment, improving screening and referral procedures, and supporting skills development and the mutual recognition of qualifications. Representatives from various countries and international organizations participated in the discussions and exchanged views on the implementation of GCM objectives.
At the conclusion of the roundtables, Vusal Huseynov will present a summary of Roundtable 1 during the policy debate chaired by the International Organization for Migration.
As part of promoting the upcoming World Urban Forum 13, a high-level side event on migration and urbanization will be jointly organized at the UN Headquarters by Azerbaijan, the International Organization for Migration, and UN-Habitat.
The forum will conclude on May 8.
