Azerbaijani chess team wins friendly match

Baku, June 13 (AZERTAC). A friendly match between Azerbaijani and Georgian men chess players ended with the victory of the Azerbaijani national with 14,5 pts.

The match is said to be build up for the forthcoming Chess Olympiad which is scheduled to take place in the Turkish metropole of Istanbul, from August 27 to September 10, 2012.

Azerbaijan was represented by Shahriyar Mammadyarov (2726), Rauf Mammadov (2628), Eltaj Safarli (2620), Qadir Huseynov (2609), Vasif Durarbeyly (2579).

The Georgian tem included: Baadur Jobava (2721), Mikhail Mchedlishvili (2656), Constantin Shanava (2589), Levan Panchulaya (2581) and Merab Gagunashvili.

The match was played under the Scheveningen system which is a method of organizing a chess match between two teams. Each player on one team plays each player on the other team. The team with the highest number of games won is the winner. This system is a popular way to create title norm opportunities.

The system was first used in a tournament in Scheveningen in 1923. The idea behind it was that a team of ten Dutch players could face ten foreign masters. This has the intention of giving the players on the team experience against strong competition.
