Azerbaijani first vice speaker meets German MP
Baku, May 25 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s first vice speaker Ziyafet Asgarov has today met deputy of the German Bundestag Erich Fritz.
Asgarov said “after gaining its independence Azerbaijan started to pursue a policy of European integration and today this policy is continued”. He said huge democratic changes happened in Azerbaijan during last 20 years: “On the initiative of national leader Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan`s first constitution was adopted in 1995 by a nationwide referendum. More than 50 articles of the constitution feature human rights and freedoms. Azerbaijan has set up a multiparty parliament, and favorable conditions for media.”
The first vice speaker stated that “all this show how Azerbaijani people are committed to the European values”. Asgarov said Azerbaijan pays great attention to expanding cooperation with European institutions.
On Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Asgarov said occupation of 20 percent of the country`s lands impedes sustainable economic growth and democratic development in the region. He said OSCE Minsk Group`s peace mission gave no results in last 20 years: “Various influential international organizations like the United Nations, the European Union and the Council of Europe adopted resolutions demanding liberation of Azerbaijan`s occupied lands. However, Armenia continues to keep Azerbaijan`s territories under invasion by ignoring those resolutions, and this fact proves the existence of double standards and injustice in the world”.
The German MP praised economic and democratic progress in Azerbaijan, saying there is “a perfect” legislative base for protection of human rights and freedoms.
The two also discussed other issues of mutual interest.
