Azerbaijani FM, US Secretary of State make joint press statements
Washington, June 4 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and US Secretary of State John Kerry have today given a joint press conference following their meeting in Washington.
The US Secretary of State noted that he discussed a number of issues with President Ilham Aliyev in the last few months.
Kerry hailed tolerance in Azerbaijan, saying representatives of various religions live together in peace in the country.
Noting Elmar Mammadyarov’s report at the American Jewish Committee Global Forum 2013, the U.S. official said that the Azerbaijani FM`s speech on the fight against anti-Semitism and loyalty to the diversity and pluralism in Azerbaijan was greeted with a storm of applause.
Stressing that Azerbaijan is an important partner for the US, Kerry underlined Azerbaijan’s contribution to NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and to the energy security of Europe, as well as the country’s role in other significant issues for the US.
Calling the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict a threat to the regional stability, the Secretary of State said that the US, as a co-chair country of the OSCE Minsk Group, would do its best to solve the dispute.
The Azerbaijani FM noted that Azerbaijan attaches special importance to bilateral relations with the USA, and expressed confidence that the successful cooperation in economic, investment and energy areas, as well as within international organizations would further enhance. Speaking about the negotiations on the peaceful settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, the FM noted that the status quo must be changed. Mammadyarov added that finding a solution to the dispute requires the withdrawal of the Armenian military from Azerbaijan’s occupied lands.
