Azerbaijan’s National Salvation Day in Libyan spotlight
Baku, June 14 (AZERTAC). Azerbaijan`s National Salvation Day has been in the spotlight in Libya as the country`s leading newspapers are publishing articles highlighting the history of the Salvation Day when Azerbaijani people mark the return of their national leader Heydar Aliyev to power.
In its article titled “Azerbaijan`s National Salvation Day. Announcement of prosperity and a look into the future”, Febrayer newspaper focuses on developments in Azerbaijan in early 1990s.
The article says the first years of its independence are characterized by the crisis within the country and in the government. “Chaos occupied all the spheres of the social life. The situation was very critical in the army, which provoked an increase in the number of desertion. The Armenians were expanding the occupation of the Azerbaijani lands day by day. Azerbaijan was left without a leader. Separate individuals and groups struggled for power in the country. In 1993, Azerbaijan was on the verge of civil war.”
The newspaper writes: “In such a tough period, the Azerbaijani people invited the prominent son of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev from Nakhchivan to Baku. With the nation`s and authorities` insistent demand he retuned to Baku. In a short period of time Heydar Aliyev put an end to civil war in Azerbaijan. On June 15, 1993 Heydar Aliyev was elected the chairman of the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan and this date entered the country’s history as the Day of National Salvation.”
The article also touches upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and its consequences. The newspaper says that neighboring Armenia has occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan`s territory as a result of which over one million of Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs. “Four UN Security Council resolutions demanding immediate withdrawal of the Armenian troops from the occupied areas have been ignored for over twenty years,” the article says.
