Baku hosts event on Lithuania`s Council of EU presidency
Baku, July 10 (AZERTAC). An event to mark Lithuania`s assuming the presidency of the Council of the European Union was held at the International Mugham Center in Baku.
The event brought together governmental officials of Azerbaijan, MPs, representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in the country.
Lithuanian ambassador to Azerbaijan Arturas Zhurauskas said Lithuanian chairmanship of the Council of the European Union started on 1st July.
He hailed the European Union Baku Office`s contribution to developing cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan.
Mr. Zhurauskas said expanding relations between the EU and Azerbaijan will be priority during Lithuania`s chairmanship.
“The issues will include strengthening of cooperation, defense and security within the Easters Partnership program,” he said.
The ambassador said the conference of Civil Society and the 3rd Eastern Partnership program summit to be held on November in Vilnius will be the important events during the Lithuanian chairmanship.
According to the Lithuanian envoy, the negotiations on simplification of visa regime between the Europe and Azerbaijan have already ended.
“It is planned to sign an agreement at the Vilnius summit, and this will help Azerbaijani people to easily travel to EU countries,” he added.
The ambassador expressed confidence the Vilnius summit will be fruitful in terms of expansion of cooperative ties between Azerbaijan and the EU.
