Basilan sinking deaths reach 42 as PCG recovers 2 more bodies

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Monday recovered two more bodies as search and rescue (SAR) operations continue in the waters off Baluk-Baluk Island in Basilan following the sinking of MV Trisha Kerstin 3, according to the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
In a situation report, the PCG said a rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) from BRP Melchora Aquino turned over one cadaver to BRP Capones at around 10:05 a.m.
BRP Capones also reported a sighting of one additional cadaver on Mataja Island in Basilan.
Both bodies are now up for identification and proper disposition in coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
“With this development, the fatality count has increased to 42, while the number of survivors remains at 316,” it said.
To date, the PCG’s SAR operations continue, and technical divers have begun underwater operations in suspected sites off Basilan on Sunday.
These divers are tasked with conducting underwater inspections, information gathering, and facilitating any necessary recovery or rescue operations.
On Sunday, the Coast Guard announced the recovery of the body of PCG Seaman First Class (SN1) Alkhaizar Hadjail, a PCG marshal who was aboard the vessel during the incident.
“Accounts from survivors indicate that, while the vessel was in distress, SN1 Hadjail assisted and directed passengers on the appropriate actions to take for their safety amid the maritime emergency,” PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said.
She also acknowledged a media interview given by a family member who expressed concerns regarding the alleged lack of updates and involvement in the SAR.
“At this time, the PCG appeals for understanding and compassion as the bereaved family grieves. The PCG, through a designated Survivor Petty Officer, extends all necessary assistance, including support for claims and other needs, and will continue to provide aid during this difficult period,” Cayabyab said.
