EU-AZERBAIJAN COOPERATION COUNCIL HOLDS 8th MEETING
The 8th meeting of the European Union-Azerbaijan Cooperation Council was held in Luxembourg.
The meeting was co-chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev on behalf of Azerbaijan and Portugal`s Minister of Europe Manuel Lobo Antunes of EU.
The EU delegation also included European Commission`s Acting Director for Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia, Gunnar Wiegand, and EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Peter Semneby.
The gathering is first such a high level meeting since the EU signed the Action Plan for Azerbaijan within the Neighborhood policy, and also since Azerbaijan and EU signed a memorandum of understanding on strategic partnership in energy sector.
The meeting discussed Azerbaijan`s progress in implementing the Action Plan, the country`s political and economic reforms as well as recent developments in the South Caucasus and other issues of mutual interest, including energy, transport, democratization and human rights.
The parties stressed the necessity to further intensify political cooperation.
The Azerbaijani side noted the importance of the soonest possible settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh on the basis of international legal norms, including principles of territorial integrity, state sovereignty and inviolability of internationally recognized borders.
