FOREIGN MINISTER MEETS WITH EU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE FOR SOUTH CAUCASUS
The Minister informed the visitors on his meeting with EU officials in Brussels noting that Azerbaijan attaches particular importance to its relationship with the organization.
Mr. Talvitie said he followed closely the course of democratic reforms in Azerbaijan, and the November 6 parliamentary elections in the country in particular. He noted the elections were held in “normal conditions” although there were some irregularities in vote counting. Mr. Talvitie added that democratic processes are nowhere perfect, even in the European Union. He especially emphasized the importance of democratic reform in Azerbaijan for the whole region, and expressed hope for the progress in government-opposition dialogue.
Minister Mammadyarov explained the significance of the President Ilham Aliyev’s Orders promoting free and transparent conduct of the parliamentary elections that, as he especially noted, will play an important role in further development of the country. He told that after the elections, a number of complaints were submitted to the Central Election Commission. “Each of them is scrutinized, and will be responded in compliance with the law,” said FM Mammadyarov.
Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Heikki Talvitie also exchanged views on the peace process in the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, situation in the region and other important issues.
