Lauryn Williams makes Olympic history in Sochi
Baku, February 20 (AZERTAC). The USA’s 2005 world 100m champion Lauryn Williams made history at the Winter Olympics in Sochi today (19) by becoming the first Olympic athletics gold medallist to win a medal at the Winter Games.
Williams, who took 4x100m gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, has focused on the bobsleigh over the winter and made it on to the US team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Paired with driver Elana Meyers in the two-woman bobsled, Williams held pole position overnight after setting a track record on their first slide and a start record on their second slide.
They maintained their lead after today’s third heat and despite taking a few knocks on their final run, Williams and Meyers held on to a medal position and took silver, just 0.10 behind the victorious Canadian team.
Only four other people in history have won medals at both the Summer and Winter Olympics. USA’s Eddie Eagan is the only person to have won gold at both Games, winning the light heavyweight boxing title at the 1920 Summer Games, followed by gold in the four-man bobsled at the 1932 Winter Games.
