Berlin, May 6, AZERTAC
On May 5, a memorial plaque dedicated to Azerbaijani prisoners of war was unveiled at the Buchenwald concentration camp.
A ceremony marking the unveiling of the memorial plaque, prepared in Azerbaijani and German by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Germany, was held at the Buchenwald memorial complex.
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Germany Nasimi Aghayev, Deputy Director of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation Philipp Neumann-Thein, and members of the Azerbaijani diaspora attended the ceremony.
The initiative, led by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Germany, is of great importance in preserving the memory of Azerbaijani prisoners of war who died in German prison camps and passing it on to future generations. This is the fourth memorial plaque unveiled so far.
Speaking at the ceremony, Philipp Neumann-Thein stressed the importance of unveiling a memorial plaque dedicated to Azerbaijani prisoners of war at the Buchenwald memorial complex at the initiative of the Azerbaijani Embassy.
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Germany Nasimi Aghayev noted that more than 700,000 Azerbaijanis took part in the fight against fascism during World War II, and more than half of them lost their lives.
Following the speeches, the cover was removed from the memorial plaque and a wreath was laid in front of it.
The Buchenwald concentration camp was one of the largest concentration camps established by Nazi Germany, near the city of Weimar, in 1937. The camp was liberated by Allied forces in April 1945. Today, the Buchenwald site operates as a memorial complex.
