MM DEPUTY SPEAKER MEETS WITH NATO SECRETARY GENERAL’S SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE
NATO is satisfied with the military reforms in Azerbaijan, deputy speaker of the Milli Majlis, chairman of the MM standing commission on the security and defense Ziyafet Asgarov said in a meeting with the NATO delegation led by Robert Simmons, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia .
Z. Asgarov briefed the NATO delegation on the work done in Azerbaijan to implement the Partnership for Peace project and Individual Partnership Program. According to him, the structure of all Armed Force units has been adapted to NATO standards. The special school works to train well-qualified servicemen. The role of Azerbaijan in ensuring energy security in Europe was enhanced.
Z. Asgarov pointed out that Armenia’s occupying Azerbaijani lands does not allow implementing reforms faster. While the OSCE Minsk Group is in charge of mediation efforts, Russia, Minsk Group co-chair, keeps on arming Armenia. The ammunition withdrawn from Georgia is being brought to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. It exacerbates the situation and distorts the balance in the region.
R. Simmons told of the aims of his visit. He said he is satisfied with successful implementation of the first phase of the Individual Partnership Program. He welcomed structural reforms in the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan, and thanked the country for supporting NATO’s international operations.
The meeting also focused on a number of other issues of mutual interest.
