MM SPEAKER MEETS WITH SWISS COUNTERPART
Chairman of the Milli Majlis Ogtay Asadov has met today with Speaker of Switzerland`s National Council Mrs. Christine Egerszegi-Obrist.
MM speaker said Azerbaijan has established close cooperation with many foreign parliaments after the country regained its independence. Development of ties with the Swiss Confederation makes up an important part Azerbaijan`s foreign policy. According to him, interparliamentary ties are very important. A friendship group to cooperate with the Swiss parliament was set up in the Milli Majlis.
Speaker Asadov briefed his Swiss counterpart on the huge projects being implemented in Azerbaijan and accomplishments achieved. He pointed out that Azerbaijan is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Realization of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzerum oil and gas pipelines increases Azerbaijan`s prestige and role in ensuring Europe`s energy security.
On the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Asadov said Azerbaijan favors peaceful resolution. Armenia`s destructive position and the fact that this country disregards the decisions of the UN Security Council, Council of Europe, OSCE and other international organizations are the source of danger for the region and Europe. Therefore, the world community must impose sanctions on aggressor, and step up its efforts to achieve fair settlement of the conflict.
Egerszegi-Obrist said Switzerland watches democratic processes in Azerbaijan and is keen on development of ties with Azerbaijan.
The meeting also focused on a number of other issues of mutual concern.
