Post-COP29 Seminar held in Islamabad: Reflections from Baku to Pakistan

A seminar titled “Post-COP29 Seminar: Reflections from Baku to Pakistan” was held in Capital Islamabad. The event was addressed by the Republic of Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov and other dignitaries. Pakistani Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Climate & Environment Coordination Change Romina Khurshid Alam, Pakistani Supreme Court’s Senior Judge Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, Judge of the Lahore High Court Justice Jawad Hassan and other officials also spoke on the occasion.
Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, Khazar Farhadov in his address said that COP29 was successful and world leaders in a large number arrived in Azerbaijan, moreover, over 76 thousand people participated in the moot. He said that the Climate Fund in Baku also reached new heights and is targeted at 1.3 trillion by 2035. The Ambassador said that I am grateful for Pakistan's participation in COP29.
He emphasized that the loss and damage fund has started operating at full capacity after the Baku COP29. He said that in addition to action agenda initiatives, the COP29 presidency made progress in several private areas for climate action. These include advances in transparency, and securing fund for loss and damage. Ambassador Farhadov said that in addition to presidential initiatives, parties and other stakeholder’s stepped-up and showed leadership with their own commitments.
Romina Khurshid Alam praised Pakistan’s negotiators who spearheaded technical and policy talks at COP29, saying they were lauded by the international observers as well. She said Pakistan would host a meeting of V20 (vulnerable 20) soon to formulate a roadmap, adding that V20 and developing countries needed to come up with a mechanism to push for their rights amid delaying tactics by the rich nations. Ms. Alam said that we want environmental justice, and it’s essential for developing and affected countries to collaborate.
In his remarks, the Islamabad based Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) Executive Director; Dr Abid Sulehri stressed the need to learn from COP29 on the road to COP30 in Belem, Brazil. He said the path forward requires collaborative effort, innovative strategies, and a renewed commitment to addressing climate change challenges at both national and international levels.
