Presidential election in Azerbaijan to be held on October 9
Baku, August 2 (AZERTAC). Presidential election in Azerbaijan will take place on October 9, the country`s Central Election Commission has decided at its Friday session chaired by Mazahir Panahov.
CEC chairman Panahov said that according to article 178.1 of Election Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Wednesday of the third week in October of the past year when President’s term of authority ends, shall be considered as Election Day.
The chairman noted the last presidential election in Azerbaijan was held on October 15, 2008 and the next election was scheduled for October 16, 2013. “This year the President’s 5-year term of office is going to end and the next elections are to be held according to the law.”
“But under Article 8.2 of Election Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan, voting day shall be considered a non-working day in the country where election (referendum) is held.”
“But given the fact that this day coincides with Eid al-Adha, according to another article of the Election Code, Election Day can be brought forward.”
Panahov proposed holding the presidential election on October 9, 2013.
The majority of members of the Central Election Commission supported the proposal. The CEC decided to declare October 9, 2013 as Election Day. The Commission also approved a plan of preparations for the election.
The session also saw establishment of a 9-men expert group under the Central Election Commission to consider the appeals filed against actions and decisions related with the violation of voting rights.
