SKIRMISH IN GEORGIA-OSETIA CONFLICT ZONE CEASED
The skirmish was ceased on August 19 after armed forces of Georgia seized the strategic points in Tskhinvali region from where Osetians fired Georgian villages. However, to give control over the region to peacekeeping forces including Russians and Osetians as well as 50 Georgian soldiers Supreme Commander-in-chief Mikhail Saakashvili ordered to withdraw Ministry of Defense units and Interior troops. At present, these troops are stationed in Gori district adjacent to the conflict zone. President called this step of Georgian authorities as the last chance of peaceful resolution of the conflict. Thus, the six-day skirmish causing casualties ended.
Minister of Defense of Georgia Georgiy Baramidze stated that Georgian side has all the potentialities to secure the population as armed forces are stationed in the nearby areas. In the event of necessity troop can reach the conflict zone in 15 minutes. We pulled the army out of the conflict zone to settle the issue through political dialogue rather than bloodshed.
