Strong earthquake of 5.9 magnitude jolts Pakistan

A strong earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck Pakistan late last night, with tremors felt across many parts of the country. According to the Seismic Monitoring Center of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the tremors were felt in capital Islamabad and other cities and areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab provinces besides Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The quake originated at 9:56 PM at a depth of 111 kilometers with its epicenter in the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. The jolts of the earthquake were felt in Peshawar, Abbottabad, Rawalpindi and other cities. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The tremors prompted residents of the federal capital Islamabad and other cities to rush outside their homes for safety. Several quakes have hit Afghanistan and Pakistan in recent days. According to the latest figures, in Afghanistan, the death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck the country early Monday rose to 2,205. The vast majority of those killed in the magnitude-6.0 earthquake that jolted the mountainous region bordering Pakistan were in Kunar province.
