A teacher at a vocational college in Essen, Germany, was attacked with a knife and severely wounded on Friday, Xinhua reports.

Police shot and arrested the attacker at the scene.

According to German police, the suspect attempted to flee and was shot during the arrest. He is currently receiving medical treatment. The teacher sustained a stab wound to the chest but is not in critical condition.

German media reported that the attacker is an 18-year-old student at the college.

Following the incident, police cordoned off the campus and deployed special units.
