UNESCO DIRECTOR GENERAL CONGRATULATES PRESIDENT OF AZERBAIJAN ON HIS BIRTHDAY
UNESCO Director General Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura congratulated President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on his birthday.
The letter says: “I first met with You on April 2000. Then, I paid an official visit to Azerbaijan at the invitation of the late Heydar Aliyev. Seven and a half year has elapsed since then. Later, I had a chance to meet with You in Paris, New York, Saint Petersburg and Moscow. A meeting I remember most was appointment of Mehriban Aliyeva as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. I personally became acquainted with Mehriban Aliyeva in 2004. During my second official visit to Azerbaijan, on August 2005, You warmly received me. I jointly with You attended the foundation-laying ceremony of mugham center. Mugham is the cultural heritage of your country that was recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of human culture. I`m looking forward to meeting you at the inauguration ceremony of mugham center in 2008. I again congratulate You on your birthday, wish You prosperity and happiness".
The relations between UNESCO and the Republic of Azerbaijan became dynamically developed after appointment of the First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. Several projects in the field of science, education and culture were implemented under the direction of Mehriban Aliyeva. Azerbaijani mughams were included into the list of UNESCO heritage, the Gobustan monuments into the list of world cultural heritage. Large-scale events on education and culture were organized in Azerbaijan. Jubilees of the world-known Azerbaijani scientist-chemist, academician Yusif Mammadaliyev and the eminent carpet master, People’s Artist Latif Karimov sparked off deep resonance in France.
