US congressman receives Heydar Aliyev award
Baku, May 11 (AZERTAC). The United States` outstanding public and political figure has received the Heydar Aliyev award in a solemn event organized by the Azerbaijani embassy in Washington to mark the 90th anniversary of Azerbaijani national leader Heydar Aliyev.
The Heydar Aliyev award, made by the Embassy, was presented to Congressmen Dan Burton, former chairman of the Subcommittee for Europe and Eurasia Affairs in U.S. House of Representatives, for his contributions to developing Azerbaijan-US relations.
Republican Dan Burton of Indiana is the first politician, who spoke of the Khojaly tragedy in the United States Congress.
Expressing his gratitude for the award, the Congressman vowed he would further continue efforts for the expansion of cooperation between the two countries.
Congratulatory letters of mayors of Washington and Savanna cities were read out in the event held in Mayflower hotel.
The event was attended by US officials, diplomats accredited in Washington, experts of research centers, as well as representatives of Turkish and Jews communities and former speaker of the US House of Representatives Bob Livingston.
Addressing the event, ambassador Elin Suleymanov spoke of national leader Heydar Aliyev`s life and activities, saying the national leader devoted his life to development of his homeland and improvement of the people`s well-being.
The diplomat said Azerbaijan`s achievements were the result of national leader Heydar Aliyev`s successful foreign policy.
Touching upon roles of leaders in history, the ambassador praised Abraham Lincoln`s important decisions, which changed the life of the people of the United States of America.
Suleymanov talked about national leader Heydar Aliyev`s invaluable merits in protecting and strengthening of the state independence and bolstering of Azerbaijan`s position on the international scene.
Following the official part of the event, participants enjoyed performance of Azerbaijani jazzman, winner of Montreal International Jazz Festival Emil Afrasiyab and a jazz band headed by Zulfugar Bagirov.
