UZBEK PRESIDENT DESCRIBES ACTIVITIES OF SOROS FOUNDATION AS CONTRADICTING COUNTRY’S LEGISLATION
AzerTAj correspondent reported from Uzbekistan that President Islam Karimov had met at the county’s Parliament with a group of journalists. Asked of the stopping the activity of the Soros Foundation in Uzbekistan, the President noted it was running counter to the country’s legislation. Some of the Fund's projects have provoked aggravation of interethnic problems, he said in particular.
In his turn, founder of the organization, George Soros state in Bishkek, Kyrgizstan that the measure would have a negative impact on the republican budget, and rejected accusation by the Uzbek President saying the foundation did not exceed the limits of law.
Since 1996, the Soros Foundation has invested $22 mln in a number of the projects in Uzbekistan including last year $3,7 mln in spheres of healthcare, education and economy.
