8TH MEETING OF RUSSIA-AZERBAIJAN INTERGOVERNMENTAL COMMISSION ON ECONOMIC COOPERATION HELD
Greeting the guests, first Deputy Prime Minister of the Azerbaijan Republic Abbas Abbasov pointed out that a certain work has been done for the past period to expand trade and economic cooperation between two countries and solve existing problems. According to him, the main showing of the bilateral relations – commodity turnover between Azerbaijan and Russia – almost doubled in 2003 in comparison with 2002 reaching 531,2 million dollars. “The existing favorable foundation for such cooperation is the result of contribution by the leaders of Azerbaijan Republic and the Russian Federation,” Mr. A. Abbasov said. He emphasized that the cooperation of Russian and Azerbaijan company is successfully continuing in the sphere of energy and fuel complex: 2,6 million tons of oil was transported through Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline in 2003; transit of natural gas to the Azerbaijan Republic is also carried out through the Russian territory, and this year, its volume is planned to reach 5,5 billion cubic meters. The speaker also reported that reliable and trouble-free operation of energy systems of Russia and Azerbaijan is ensured in parallel mode; measures to simplify passenger and good trains operations between Azerbaijan and Russia are being taken: fast passenger train connecting Baku and Makhachkala has been operating since April 2003. ,”To further foster bilateral links, it is necessary to join efforts to increase in commodity turnover, create favorable basis for transportation of good, development of communications and currency and financial support of the trade and economic cooperation,” the first Prime Minister said.
The next speaker, Minister of Energy and Industry of the Russian Federation Viktor Khristenko noted that successful implementation of the agreements reached earlier is a vivid example of our two people’s good will for mutually beneficial cooperation. Today, according to him, very good contractual and legal base exists between the two countries. “During this meeting, we should analyze the work done, generalize existing positive tendencies and outline further steps aimed at expanding mutually beneficial economic and cultural links,” the Russian Minister said. He expressed hope that the meeting would be fruitful and contribute to further strengthening mutually beneficial ties between Russia and Azerbaijan.

With the meeting completed, a ceremony of signing bilateral documents between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation was held.
The Protocol of the working meeting between Director General of the Azerbaijan National Aerospace Agency and Head of the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation was signed by Director General of the Azerbaijan National Aerospace Agency Aflatun Hasanov and Head of the Federal Space Agency of the Russian Federation Anatoliy Perminov.
The contract between Special Design Bureau of Cosmic Instrument Designing of the Azerbaijan Republic and Scientific Research Institute of Cosmic Instrument Designing of the Russian Federation on sale of hardware-software system for receiving data from Russian and Foreign space vehicles was signed by Director of the Special Design Bureau of Cosmic Instrument Designing of the Azerbaijan Republic Fakhraddin Aghayev and Deputy Director General of the Scientific Research Institute of Cosmic Instrument Designing of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Dunayev.
The Protocol of the 8th sitting of the Russia-Azerbaijan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation was signed by first Deputy Prime Minister of the Azerbaijan Republic Abbas Abbasov and Minister of Energy and Industry of the Russian Federation Viktor Khristenko.
The meeting was attended by Ambassadors of the Russian Federation in Baku Nikolay Ryabov and Ambassador of the Azerbaijan Republic in Moscow Ramiz Rizayev.
