AFRICA ON VERGE OF ECOLOGICAL CATASTROPHE
Having compared satellite pictures of the African lakes and the rivers for the last some decades, experts have noted their prompt shallowing. The most catastrophic situation is observed on lake Chad, which has dried up for 90 percent. Intensive extraction salt extremely fatally influences on condition of lake Songor in Ghana, and construction of a dam on the river Zambezi has threatened the whole river system. The lake Nakuru in Kenya suffers from extensive deforestation in adjoining territories.
To see scales of the put damage, as they said, it is possible only from space. So, the measurements made from the satellite, have shown, that water level in the largest African reservoir of pure water, lake Victoria, has gone down from the beginning of 1990s of one meter. The fence of water for preventive maintenance of illnesses and needs of agriculture has lowered the water level in the river Niger for 80 percent for last 20 years. The head of the program, former minister on preservation of the environment of Germany Clause Topfer has called the world community to apply more efforts for preservation of water objects, so important for economy and the population of Africa.
