Albania reports 125 new HIV cases in 2025

Albania registered 125 new HIV cases in 2025, health authorities said on Monday, as experts urged greater awareness, prevention and access to treatment in line with the message of World AIDS Day, according to ATA agency.
According to the Institute of Public Health, the total number of HIV cases recorded in the country from 1993 to October 2025 has reached 1,973. National prevalence is estimated at 0.08%, while the 2025 incidence rate stands at 5.3 cases per 100,000 people.
Sexual transmission remains the main cause of infection, accounting for 72.6% of cases, most of them heterosexually transmitted. Mother-to-child, blood-borne and injection-drug transmission remain at very low levels.
The infection is most common among people aged 35-44 (27.8%) and 25-34 (26.9%). The gender imbalance persists, with 98 cases reported among men and 27 among women in 2025 – a ratio of 3.5 to 1.
The World Health Organization has reported that 1.3 million people were infected with HIV in 2024 and 630,000 died of AIDS-related causes.
Experts emphasise prevention, early testing and continuous treatment. HIV testing in Albania is free, confidential and widely available, while treatment is provided at no cost at the Infectious Diseases Service and the Paediatric Infectious Ward at the University Hospital Centre in Tirana.
