Azerbaijan, UK discuss development of relations
Baku, September 27 (AZERTAC). Speaker of Azerbaijan`s Parliament Ogtay Asadov has met a UK delegation led by the Prime Minister`s Trade Envoy, member of the House of Lords Lord Risby.
Asadov spoke of the Azerbaijan-UK relations, noting the importance of reciprocal visits and meetings in terms of strengthening the bilateral ties.
He hailed development of political and economic cooperation between the two countries. Asadov underlined that last year saw more than $800 million trade turnover between Azerbaijan and the UK, adding “during the first half of the current year it was $700 million”. “This is an indicator of dynamic development of economic relations between our countries.”
Asadov also praised the cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries, and stressed the role of friendship groups in the legislative bodies in development of bilateral relations.
He said the strengthening of mutual cooperation with the European countries was one of the key priorities in Azerbaijan`s foreign policy, and stressed Azerbaijan`s role in ensuring energy security of the continent.
Touching upon the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Asadov said the problem was the serious threat to safety of not only the region, but also whole Europe.
Lord Risby, in turn, expressed satisfaction with the development of relations between the two countries, and with the activity of British companies in Azerbaijan. He said Azerbaijan plays an important role in ensuring European energy security.
