AZERBAIJAN’S EMBASSY IN NETHERLANDS HOLDS CONFERENCE ON 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF GUAM
A conference to mark the 10th anniversary of GUAM was held December 10 in the Institute of International Relations Clingendael in Hague, Netherlands.
The event was attended by ambassadors of a number of countries, representatives of the Netherlands government, NGOs, research centers and media. The conference started with opening remarks of rector of the Clingendael Institute Jaap de Zwaan and Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the Netherlands Fuad Iskandarov. Prof. Jaap de Zwaan touched on the GUAM’s role in the international arena and EU-GUAM cooperation.
F. Iskandarov provided information about establishment of the GUAM, its major areas of activity and future plans, and revealed common stance of GUAM member countries towards regional conflicts and separatism. He hoped that more nations will join Lithuanian President Adamkus’s initiative to set up the “GUAM’s Friends” group in the European Union.
Ambassadors of Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova in the Netherlands lingered around GUAM’s main priorities, democracy development, security, energy and transport projects and cooperation with international organizations.
Tofig Musayev, Chief of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s Foreign Policy Planning and Strategic Researches Department, told of GUAM’s establishment, activity, achievements and its priorities.
Also speakers at the event spoke about GUAM-EU and GUAM-NATO relationships, GUAM’s role in the energy security of Europe.
Azerbaijani embassy in the Kingdom of Netherlands hosted a reception for conference participants.
