BAKU TO HOST SECOND SUMMIT OF GUAM
Summit of the heads of state of the Organization For Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) is expected in Baku on 18-19 June. Along with the heads of the member states, the event is expected to attend by high officials of several non-member countries.
GUAM has been founded on the Declaration adopted at the meeting of the heads of state of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova in the Council of Europe Summit framework in 1997. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined this group and the Organization was called GUUAM. In 2005,Uzbeksitan left the structure.
At meeting of the heads of GUAM member states in Yalta, 2001, the Organization was called the regional international organization, its By-Laws were elaborated and declared its main principles.
The next summit of the GUAM heads of state in Kishinev, April 2005, was of special importance. In Summit, the participants adopted two documents - “For Democracy, Stability and Development” and “Development of Democracy From Baltic to Black Sea”.
The May 23, 2006 Summit of the heads of state in Kiev was beginning of a new stage in the Organization’s activity. At this Summit, the structure was called the ”Organization For Democracy and Economic Development” and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was elected its Secretary General.
