Caspian Sea turns red: Test results announced

The water samples taken from the Caspian Sea contain no dangerous substances, Kazinform News Agency reports.

The specialists of the regional ecology department took water samples on February 12, 2025, to check for the presence of chemicals and petroleum products following the red discoloration of the Caspian Sea.

"As a result of the analysis, no harmful substances were found. The water is safe. The water naturally has a dark brownish-red color caused by algae. After the recent snowfall this phenomenon became more pronounced. The algae grow in shallow waters, particularly along our coastline. In areas where they accumulate, the water changes color. Of course, even though we understand this natural phenomenon, we are still required to check the water’s condition," said Kaissar Nadirbek, head of the ecology department.

Earlier, Kazinform reported that the Caspian Sea had turned red. Ecologists explained the phenomenon.
