CEC ANNOUNCES START OF PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
During the meeting of the Central Election Commission (CEC), its members have unanimously decided to announce the start of the presidential election campaign today, notwithstanding the Election Code requirement that the election start at least 75 days before the voting.
CEC members adopted a decision to announce October 15, 2008 as the Election Day.
CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov said the progressive legal base had been created to hold fair elections with political stability, democratic conditions and political will existing in Azerbaijan.
After the report of CEC secretary Natig Mammadov, CEC has approved the presidential election campaign schedule.
To prepare for the elections, the CEC has so far verified voters` lists, created secretariats of the constituency election commissions, improved the working conditions of lower election commissions, implemented joint projects with international organizations and undertook other actions.
Attending the meeting were representatives of the OSCE Baku Office, US embassy, IFES, and media representatives.
