EANA OFFICIALS HOLD FINAL MEETING IN BAKU
A meeting with representatives of the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) including Secretary General Eric Nylen and member of the Bureau, president of the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) Matyas Vince was held in the Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency (AZERTAC).
Opening the meeting Aslan Aslanov, AZERTAC Director General expressed his gratitude to the guests for visit to clarify the membership status of the State Agency to EANA.
Expressing his gratitude for hospitality member of the Bureau, President of the Hungarian News Agency (MTI) Matyas Vince said he examined the state of mass media in Baku.
He also noted according to the Charter of EANA only one agency from one country can be a member of the Organization, adding that EANA includes 30 member agencies from European countries.
Matyas Vince said AZERTAC’s appeal to be a member of EANA would be discussed in the Organization’s General Assembly’s meeting due in Tallinn, Estonia, due April 2008.
“We will present a report on our meetings in Baku, facts, gathered on the state of Azerbaijani mass media, as well as our opinions on AZERTAC”, Matyas Vince stressed.
Touching upon AZERTAC’ s membership perspectives, Mr. Vince stressed the Agency meets all requirements to be a member of EANA.
“It is a positive factor that AZERTAC- Azerbaijan’s leading agency - has correspondents in many countries and its accession to EANA will positively influence on Azerbaijan’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures. All these facts will be reflected in our report”, said Mr. Vince.
EANA Secretary General Eric Nylen briefed on the Organization in the meeting.
Answering the questions on the state of Azerbaijani mass media, Matyas Vince said “functioning of over 3 thousands of newspapers and magazines, great number of information agencies in Azerbaijan surprised us very much”.
“We witnessed real democracy in mass media in Azerbaijan. Everyone can easely work in media, and registering prosedure of newspapers here is easy, too. Functioning of various and pro-opposition media outlets proves freedom of mass media in Azerbaijan”, said Mr. Vince.
Sharing their impressions about Azerbaijan, the guests noted though the majority of populaion is Muslim Azeraijan is a secular country.
They also said “we witnessed that Azeraijan is a European country and it has a great tourism potential.”
Mr. Aslanov expressed his gratitude to the representatives for their visit to Azerbaijan and their sincere words.
