Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov participating in the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New-York met September 27 with his Guatemalan counterpart Gert Rosenthal to discuss the bilateral ties between the two countries within the United Nations.

The meeting ended with the signing of the bilateral cooperation agreement.

Diplomatic ties between Azerbaijan and Guatemala were established in 1994.

The same day, Elmar Mammadyarov met with representatives of the American Jewish Committee, the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and other Jewish organizations of the USA to discuss the USA-Azerbaijan relations as well as negotiations on settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, and latest developments in the region.

The Azeri Minister said the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline and the planned Baku-Tbilisi-Akhalkalaki-Qars railway projects will change the region for the better.

Mr. Mammadyarov said he believes the Jewish communities will more actively support Azerbaijan in the U.S. Congress.

The representatives of the U.S. Jewish communities recalled their visits to Azerbaijan, adding they witnessed religious and cultural tolerance in the country.
