Gas leak suspected in restaurant explosion in Cheongju, 15 residents injured

An explosion at a restaurant in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, injured 15 residents, according to Seoul Economic Daily.
According to fire authorities, the explosion occurred at approximately 4 a.m. on January 13 on the first floor of a three-story commercial building in Bongmyeong-dong, Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju. Eight residents from nearby detached houses who were sleeping at the time were injured by glass fragments and other debris and were transported to hospitals. The remaining seven sustained minor injuries but did not require hospital transport.
The Korea Gas Safety Corporation, which responded to the scene, said debris suspected to be from two exploded LP gas cylinders was found and is under investigation.
Fire authorities are focusing on a gas leak as the likely cause of the explosion while investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
