GERMAN MINISTRY OF INTERIOR ISSUES REPORT ON MUSLIMS IN GERMANY
The Federal Ministry of Interior of Germany has issued a report on Muslims residing in the country. According to the report, some 3.5 million Muslims including 2.6 million are of Turkish origin, of whom 800 thousand have been granted German citizenship. The Turks are followed by immigrants from Bosnia (200 thousand), Iran (100 thousand), Morocco (80 thousand) and Afghanistan (70 thousand).
There are five organizations of Muslims in Germany authorized by the Federal Government. Founded in 1986, the Islamic Council of the Federal Republic of Germany unites 145 thousand Muslims of Turkish origin. The Central Council of German Muslim founded in 1994 is an organization of 20 thousand Muslim immigrants, mainly Shiites, from Arab countries.
Twenty four thousand believers fundamentalists form the Association of Islamic Cultural Centers, which was founded in 1980.
The Turkish-Islamic Association founded in 1984 by the Turkey’s State Committee on Religious Affairs numbers 220 thousand members.
On 8 April 2007, heads of the above bodies agreed to establish the Coordination Council of German Muslims.
There are 2500 places for Muslims worship in Germany, including over 30 mosques.
