GUAM FOREIGN MINISTERS’ COUNCIL MEET IN NEW YORK
The meeting chaired by the Foreign Minister of Ukraine Boris Tarasyuk focused on a number of questions, including the 2007 budget, organizational matters, by-laws on working groups. First Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Valery Chechelashvili has been confirmed as Secretary General of the Organization, while consultant of the Azerbaijan embassy in Ukraine Sabuhi Temurov as the coordinator for cooperation in economic issues. Azerbaijan assumed the role of coordinator of the re-organized working groups on emergencies and transport.
The foreign ministers noted the necessity of studying intensification of cooperation in the peacemaking activity, have assigned the national coordinators to work out concrete proposals in this connection. Parties exchanged views on the forthcoming discussions at the 61st session of UN General Assembly on the conflicts in the territory of GUAM, and their implications for international peace and security.
The mentioned discussions will be held on 6 November at the 61st session, Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov said. The Foreign Ministers Council will continue preparatory activities until that time.
The GUAM-USA meeting passed on the same day at UN headquarters has adopted a joint statement.
As is informed, Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan presided at the coordination meeting of the Islamic Conference Organization foreign ministers council and had bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of Nepal, Syria, Jordan and Uzbekistan.
