GUAM II SUMMIT DUE IN BAKU
II Summit of the heads of the Organization For Democracy and Economic Development (GUAM) member countries will be held in Baku, 18-19 June, foreign ministry’s press service said.
Along with the heads of member states, high rank officials from some countries are said to attend the action, too.
GUAM has been founded on the Base of Declaration adopted by the heads of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova in meeting they held in the framework of the Council of Europe’s Summit in 1997. In 1999, Uzbekistan also has joined this group and the Organization was named GUUAM (in 2005, Uzbekistan has left the Organization).
In 2001, the Organization was named “an international” in the Yalta meeting, with its By-Laws and basic principles adopted.
In 2005, the Kishinev Summit of GUAM has adopted two important documents - “For Democracy, Stability and Development” and “Development of Democracy From Baltic to Black Sea”, to revive activity of the Organization.
The Kiev Summit of GUAM in May 2006 was a new phase in activity of the structure. At the mentioned Summit, the Organization was renamed as “Organization For Democracy and Economic Development” and President of Azerbaijan was elected the Organization’s Secretary General.
