Hamburg knife attack suspect injures 18, may have mental issues: police
Baku, May 24, AZERTAC
The knife attack at Hamburg Central Station that left 18 people injured was not politically motivated, and the suspect likely suffers from a mental illness, German news agency dpa reported Saturday, citing police.
Train services at the station resumed as normal on Saturday morning, less than 24 hours after the incident, which occurred around 6:05 p.m. local time (1605 GMT) on Friday on a platform outside the main station hall near a stationary train.
According to dpa, citing police sources, 18 people were injured in the attack. Four victims are in a life-threatening condition. Seven other people were seriously injured, and seven people sustained minor injuries. All the injured are in a stable condition.
The suspect, identified as a 39-year-old woman, was arrested at the scene.
German media also reported that the police still see no indication of a political motivation behind the knife attack. "Rather, there are now very concrete indications of a mental illness in the suspect," police were quoted as saying. They added that there were no signs she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time.
Hamburg's central train station is one of the busiest public transport hubs in Germany.
