HOUSTON MAYOR DECLARES 28 MAY THE AZERBAIJANI NATIONAL DAY
Houston Mayor Bill White has declared May 28-Republic Day of Azerbaijan the Azerbaijani National Day in Houston, Hyuston-Baku Sister City Association (HBSCA) told AZERTAC. The proclamation of mayor’s office connected with this, gives detailed information on the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which is the first in the Muslim East, as well as, its way of statehood. It particularly highlights its contribution to world democracy after its independence. It says Azerbaijan was recognized by many democratic nations of the world, including the United States.
Besides, HBSCA had set up a display - Houston International Festival-2007 in Downtown Houston dedicated to Azerbaijan, its history, culture and traditions. The information desk of Azerbaijan featured national ornaments, introductory materials, maps, different booklets, give-away souvenirs and informative leaflets. HBSCA invited “Baku” group of 5 dancers from Baku to perform at iFest-2007. Their program included traditional Azeri dances, such as “Ag Chichek (White Flowers)”, “Chobanlar (Shepherds)”, “Tarakame”, “Vagzali” and many others. The show attracted much attention and interest from festival presenters and visitors. Visit of Baku dance group was sponsored by Azerbaijan State Committee on Azerbaijanis Living Abroad.
HBSCA has invited a mugham trio to perform at the University of St. Thomas in Houston as part of iFest-2007. Their visit was sponsored by U.S.-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce.
During iFest-2007, Yashar Aliyev, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the USA paid a visit to Houston. He met with HBSCA Board members to discuss ways to enhance the Association activity.
