IMO ASSEMBLY MEETS FOR 26TH SESSION IN LONDON
Baku, November 23 (AZERTAC). The 26th Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) started on Monday in London.
The event is attended by all 169 member states and three associate members, intergovernmental organizations which have signed the cooperation agreement, as well as the non-governmental organizations in consultative status with IMO.
The Assembly will review the work carried out by the Organization during the biennium 2008-2009, through the Council, the five IMO Committees and the Secretariat.
Highlights include the adoption of the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, to significantly reduce the emission of air pollutants from ships, efforts made to develop a regulatory regime to address greenhouse gas emissions from ships, successful delivery of IMO`s capacity building activities in developing countries, to prevent and repress acts of piracy and armed robbery against ships.
The Organization`s updated strategic and high-level action plans and the related results-based budget for 2010-2011 will be presented to the Assembly for adoption.
Azerbaijan is represented at the event by a delegation of the State Maritime Administration led by Chairman Gudrat Gurbanov.
