“The European Union cannot constantly expand. Otherwise, this structure cannot function normally. Therefore, the potential members should foresee their prospects. We should also make open message what concrete obligations we have before Europe. All should base on mutual benefit, understanding and respect”, President of Azerbaijan said in reply to the question on expansion of Europe at the International Bertelsmann Forum - 2006 in Berlin.

Noting that Azerbaijan yet has not discussed its membership in the European Union and the 5-year long “New Neighborhood Policy” program was just launched in the country, the President said implementation of this policy would promote to improve the society, continue the political reforms, democratic process, establish a civil society, and guarantee all freedoms. And with this, Azerbaijan will reach the standards required for the European Union members. Therefore, it is out internal demand to join the “New Neighborhood Policy”, and integrate to Europe”.
