INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY RECOGNIZES TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF AZERBAIJAN
“The conflicts on the South Caucasus have to be solved on the basis of norms and principles of international law. We may have our own wish, Armenia its own. But it cannot serve as ground for settlement. Settlement of the questions should take place on the legal ground. The international community recognizes territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, admitted to the UN together with the territory of Nagorno Karabakh”, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev said at the discussions on the topic “Democracy Challenges” held in the frame of the International Bertelsmann Forum- 2006 in Berlin.
Basing on facts that Nagorno Karabakh, from the historical point of view is the territory of Azerbaijan, also the fact that Armenians came to Nagorno Karabakh in the first half of 19th century, President of Azerbaijan stated that “we offered the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh the highest status of autonomy within Azerbaijan. This is maximum compromise on which we can go ahead. They, however, live with the desire simply to drop out of Azerbaijan and proclaim their so-called “independence”, attempting, thus, to violate territorial integrity of our country. This is impossible”.
