Italy does not sign against US sanctions on ICC

Italy on Friday failed to join France, Germany, Spain, Britain in a group of 79 countries who signed a joint declaration as members of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to criticize US sanctions on the international body, ANSA reported.

The declaration said the sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump "would seriously compromise all the situations currently under investigation, since the Court may have to close its field offices", in addition to "increasing the risk of impunity for the most serious crimes and threatening to erode the rule of international law".

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has said the ICC should be investigated over the case of wanted Libyan alleged war criminal Osama Almasri, for whom the Hague court has demanded an explanation after he was arrested by Italy, released and flown back to Libya where he allegedly tortures, murders and rapes migrants as young as five.
