NATIONAL “AZERBAIJAN FIT FOR CHILDREN” CONFERENCE COMMENCES IN BAKU
A conference on the theme “Azerbaijan Fit for Children” devoted to the 5th anniversary of the UN’s May 10, 2002 “A World Fit for Children” resolution has started its work Gulistan Palace in Baku on Friday.
Head of the UNICEF office in Azerbaijan Hanna Singer said their goal was to achieve more active involvement of the Azerbaijan’s government, international organizations and civil society in encouraging and protecting the right of a child, as well as to contribute to the Council of Europe’s three-year Building a Europe for and with Children program to promote children’s rights and protect them form violence. The core message of the program, according to her, is that children are not only objects of love but also subjects of law.
Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan Sevda Mammadaliyeva read out a congratulatory message from the president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO, Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva.
Speaking on behalf of the government of Azerbaijan was Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Elchin Efendiyev.
Other speakers including Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis Bahar Muradova, UNICEF representative tom Azerbaijan Hanna Singer, Special Envoy of the European Commission in Azerbaijan Alan Waddams and Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, mentioned the importance of this conference and the necessity of solving the outstanding tasks in the sphere of protection of the children’s rights.
A Baku Declaration of the Rights of a Child is to be adopted at the conference.
The conference is being conducted by the Government of Azerbaijan and UNICEF in cooperation with the European Union and the Council of Europe.
