On Tuesday 22nd June, founder of UAFA (United Aid for Azerbaijan) Gwen Burchell was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace by Queen Elizabeth II. This is in recognition not only of her commitment to humanitarian work in Azerbaijan, but also is recognition of the distinctive and pioneering approach of the whole UAFA team.

UAFA is very happy to announce that Fiona Bristow, the wife of the current British Ambassador, has agreed to become UAFA's newest patron. She will lend her special expertise in project development and community-based work.

Baku Caledonian Society's Honorary secretary, David Proudfoot, after visiting UAFA's project at Saray orphanage, decided to raise funds for UAFA by riding a bike across Europe. The 3-week journey will start on 18th July and will cover 2000 km from Vienna to London.

Launch of UAFA's Community-Based Rehabilitation program in Yasamal, Khachmaz & Ganja CBR is a powerful tool in helping the families and communities of people with disabilities to come together and improve services. It is a united approach – local medical, educational and governmental staff will be provided with training in awareness and early identification of disabilities. Families will be encouraged to form mutual support groups in order to help each other and bring attention to the lack of community-based services. The main goals are to restore functional ability in children and improve community ownership of services.
