World Sustainable Transport Day, observed annually on November 26th, recognises the important role of safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all in supporting sustainable economic growth, improving the social welfare of people and enhancing international cooperation and trade among countries, the General Assembly decided, in its resolution A/RES/77/286 of May 2023 to declare 26 November as World Sustainable Transport Day, according to ESCAP. Through the resolution, the General Assembly invited all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, international and regional organizations and civil society to mark World Sustainable Transport Day by means of education and the holding of events aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the public on sustainable transport issues. In particular, the General Assembly called for a focus on enhancing intermodal transport connectivity, promoting environmentally friendly transportation, and developing socially inclusive transport infrastructure.
The recent 8th Committee on Transport at ESCAP emphasized the importance of efficient and resilient transport networks, environmentally sustainable systems, and inclusive mobility. These discussions align with the broader goals of the Decade of Action, which calls for accelerated efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. The committee underscored the need for strategic regional cooperation and the formulation of policies that support sustainable transport development.
World Sustainable Transport Day is a call to action for all stakeholders to work together towards a future where transport systems contribute to sustainable development. UNESCAP is launching a series of knowledge products and awareness-raising tools to mark this occasion. By embracing sustainable transport, we can create a more connected, equitable, and low-carbon future.
