President: Democratic traditions of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic live on

“We are proud that the Azerbaijani people were the first to lay the foundation of democracy in the East. The traditions of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic live on today and modern Azerbaijan is its legal heir,” Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in his interview to First Deputy Director General of Russian news agency TASS Mikhail Gusman.
“If you look back at the history, it is not a coincidence that the first democratic republic in the Muslim world was founded in Azerbaijan. This stems from the past of our people, their freedom-loving, proud and progressive nature. When you read Azerbaijani classic literature you see that their works cover issues that are still relevant today. So, the founding of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic hundred years ago is of historical importance to us,” the head of state said.
