PRESIDENT`S PRESS SERVICE INFORMS
On 28 December, President of the Azerbaijan Republic Ilham Aliyev decreed on the pardon of 119 prisoners. According to the Decree, 114 people will be released from jails, 2 persons will receive decrease in term of serving of punishment half, and 3 will be released from other punishments, press-service of the Head of the State informed.
As is reported, lists of the pardoned have been made in view of numerous discussions with representatives of human rights defenders, on request of the Press Council and other organizations. Implementing public control on the penitentiaries, the human rights defenders have repeatedly visited the places of confinement, as a result of which they have made offers and recommendations on pardon and release of the prisoners.
Such cooperation being example to strengthening of dialogue between the state and society shows the active role of non-governmental organizations in resolution to the problems important for the state and society.
In regard with pardon of media representatives, the President of Azerbaijan especially emphasized that protection of human rights and freedoms, including protection of the right of expression are priorities of the policy of Azerbaijani state.
Noting importance of the freedom of speech and press, President of Azerbaijan, at the same time, expressed hope that the journalists would observe professional ethics, raise their professionalism, would always respectfully regard national-moral values of the Azerbaijani people, honor and dignity of the people.
President of Azerbaijan expressed confidence that those who were pardoned on the eve of the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis would draw right conclusion from this humanist act, realize their civic duty, observe the laws and contribute to stable development of Azerbaijan.
