PROF. ERGUN OZBUDUN: “AZERBAIJAN MADE IMPORTANT STEPS IN BUILDING DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY”
As earlier informed, Baku is to host an international conference, “Democracy in communities of transition period” on 23-25 May.
Ergun Ozbudun, professor of the Bilkent University of Turkey is one of the renowned specialists of the fraternal country in the field of constitutional law and author of a number of scientific works on theory of diverse democracy. He will also join the said Conference. Speaking to AZERTAC correspondent Professor said: “I consider necessary cooperation in the field of democracy of the scholars and politicians of Turkey and Azerbaijan, who, as said the outstanding politician Heydar Aliyev, are “one nation, two states”. Conducting in Azerbaijan such conference is another evidence to the importance that Azerbaijan attaches to the construction of democratic society. As a Council of Europe member, Azerbaijan meets requirements of the mentioned organization in the field of human rights and freedoms, freedom of faith and religion.
In communities of transition period, the said criteria are different. For example, in the Eastern European countries, with communist past, in Czech, Hungary, Poland and others, there is great progress in democratic state building. Nevertheless, you cannot speak this about Belarus and Central Asian countries. Azerbaijan since the first years of independence aspired to integrate to western democracy, intensively applying the mentioned principles in different spheres of society, and this pleases us very much. I think, that Turkey, with its 60-year experience of democracy, still have unsolved questions in this field. In this sense, it is very interesting for me to exchange at the Baku conference my views on theory of modern democracy with the politicians and scholars, as well as other specialists from abroad.
